AULA presents two powerful events this February that reflect the University’s commitment to social justice. In appreciation of Black History Month, Diversity Uprising presents Soul Divas, a special tribute to black female vocalists on Friday, February 15th. This free evening for AULA students and alumni will be held at CaféClub Fais Do Do in the historic West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Dr. Claudia Shields, AULA’s former director of Clinical Training in the graduate Psychology program, hosts the evening of live music. Songstress Tina Meeks and a four-piece band will perform songs made famous by Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, and more. The evening will also feature soul food, dancing, and a cash bar.
“This year Antioch University honors the contributions of African Americans in U.S. history by presenting a retrospective of black female vocalists,” says AULA’s director of Student Affairs, Josh Williams.“Audience members are encouraged to sing and dance while a live band pays tribute to female vocalists who have inspired us throughout our lives.”

For the sixth consecutive year, the BA program will take partin the international V-Day movement to combat violence against women and girls. This year’s two performances were directed and co-organized by BA student and theater activist Cynthia Ruffin, and will be held on the AULA campus. “Being part of V-Day really makes me feel connected to the larger movement of working to end violence against women,” Ruffin explains. “V-Day allows me to see that I don’t necessarily have to hop on a plane to the Congo to be a part of this movement. I can do the work right here and it really does affect the world. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of this.”
“A Memory, a Monologue a Rant and a Prayer,” featuring pieces performed by both men and women, will be presented on Friday, February 15th. Saturday, February 16th marks the return of the award-winning play “The Vagina Monologues,” celebrating women’s sexuality and strength.
