A brand new issue of the Antioch University Los Angeles magazine is almost here. Since it was last published a year and a half ago, the magazine has undergone something of a makeover, with a fresh new look courtesy of graphic designer Katie Havener, as well as a new name. (The publication was called AULA Connection for its first five issues.) To better convey AULA’s unique identity (and to avoid confusion with the upcoming online program Antioch U Connected), the magazine has been renamed Groundswell, a reflection of AULA’s collaborative, activist environment.

An online version of the magazine, Groundswell Digital, will offer content from the print magazine, as well as web exclusives including videos and forums.

The Summer 2013 issue of Groundswell explores the theme “renewal” through multiple lenses. The cover story highlights the personal and professional journey of Ted Knoll (MA in Organizational Management ’95), executive director of a groundbreaking homeless shelter in Whittier, CA. In addition to regular features carried over from prior issues, such as Day in the Life and Living the Mission, new features include galleries of student-created visual art, profiles of AULA’s partner organizations, and a Fun & Games section. (So get out those pencils.)

Recognizing AULA’s place in the broader community, the bi-annually published Groundswell will include many stories that center on Antioch University, and others that do not. Sara Ring, the magazine’s new editor, explains in this issue, “You’ll also read about people and organizations that are unconnected to our school, but embody our spirit and our mission.”

Director of Communications Joanna Gerber has served as publisher of the Antioch University Los Angeles magazine since its inception in 2009. “I’m very excited for the re-launch of the magazine, and I know the AULA community shares that excitement,” Gerber says. “I believe that Groundswell represents a giant step forward in terms of how we communicate – to both our school and to the greater community – the distinctive vibrancy that characterizes AULA.”

The Summer 2013 issue of Groundswell will be available at Commencement on June 23rd, and on the AULA campus the following day.
