A message from our President....
With nearly 6000 distinguished alumni, AULA has been honored to serve the diverse communities of the greater Los Angeles area for nearly 40 years. As once described by the LA Times, we offer “an unconventional education” where our “tradition of innovation and activism endures.” AULA is a dynamic, small, WASC accredited, non-profit institution that is passionate about our core values (social justice, service to community, life long learning) and how we learn (wedding theory to practice, with a strong emphasis on adult learners, small classes, and encouraging the full potential of each student). Our Bachelor of Arts (BA) program is growing rapidly with opportunities for focused study (Business and Social Entrepreneurship, Child Studies, Creative Writing, Liberal Studies, Psychology and Urban Community and Environment), and community partnerships. Students in this program have the opportunity to move seamlessly into our graduate programs in Organizational Management, Teacher Credentialing and Psychology. Our nationally esteemed, low residency Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing program – named in summer 2007 by the Atlantic Monthly as one of the top five low residency MFA programs in the USA - draws from the best poets, fiction and non-fiction writers both in Southern California and throughout the USA. Our new certificate program in Publishing Arts launched in spring 2008; and one in Writing for Children is in development. In our Graduate Psychology department, together with our Child Studies and Applied Community Psychology specializations, we are proud to offer a first of its kind specialization and certificate in Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) studies for mental health professionals. And our emerging satellite site in Santa Clarita is experiencing growing enrollment for Santa Clarita valley residents wishing to study graduate psychology closer to home. With roots at the heart of progressive higher education since the founding of Antioch College in 1852, AULA, together with our sister campuses in Seattle, Santa Barbara, Keene, New Hampshire and Yellow Springs, Ohio, continue the tradition as an institution of conscience devoted to educating principled practitioners who dedicate their professional lives to making a positive difference in our communities. On our drawing board at the moment you’ll find new graduate and certificate programs in Urban Sustainability (due to enroll first students in fall 2010, pending approvals), a possible online AA program and a growing number of community affiliations facilitated by our faculty, Board of Trustees and Alumni Community Advisory Board. At AULA you’ll find an engaged community where every voice matters, and there’s rarely a dull moment. We welcome your interest -- and invite you to join us. Sincerely,
Neal King, PhD |
