Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology
The MA in Clinical Psychology/Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program is a professional course of study that prepares students for clinical practice and/or doctoral study and for licensure in California. It meets or exceeds the requirements established by the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for academic preparation for licensure.
The Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology is designed to meet the following objectives:
- Prepare students for MFT licensure in California and for doctoral study in psychology
- Develop eclectically trained practitioners who are sensitive to issues of diversity, including gender, class, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and disability
- Promote students' personal growth and development
- Provide practical clinical experience in highly varied, community-based mental health settings
- Challenge the profession toward greater relevance to the needs of Southern California's diverse communities
Eclectic in spirit and pragmatic in orientation, this program emphasizes working sensitively with clients from diverse backgrounds. The graduate MA in Psychology curriculum focuses on changing trends in the profession and readies students for varied career paths by blending theoretical knowledge, development of clinical skills, and the opportunity for self-exploration in courses covering psychological theory, awareness of self and society, wide-ranging clinical experiences, and professional and practice issues.
Participants in the MFT track must also meet two experiential requirements. First, they must participate as a client in personal psychotherapy with a licensed therapist for at least six months while they are in the program. Second, they must undertake clinical training during which they work under careful professional supervision in one or more of 120 diverse clinical settings in the community as they learn to do therapy. Through clinical training, Antioch students have many enriching opportunities to develop their own professional approaches to their work as psychologists. Visit the Clinical Training Office section of our website for more information on these requirements and your options.
