Antioch University Los Angeles’ low-residency Certificate in Publishing Arts Program offers students the opportunity to study the business and practice of publishing—from literary presses and non-profit literary arts organizations to magazines, ezines, and beyond. During three on-campus residencies and two project periods, students in the program may serve as interns with a large publishing company, an independent publishing company, a magazine, a literary arts festival, or a private or public arts funding agency, or they may develop and implement a business plan for a publishing project of their own. Career advice and strategy is provided throughout. An MFA is not required in order to pursue the Certificate. Anyone who holds a BA, BS, MA, MS, MFA, PhD, or EdD from an accredited institution may apply.
Structure of the Certificate Program
The Certificate in Publishing Arts is a one-year program completed in five stages:
Stage I: First On-Campus Residency: (10 days) The entering Certificate Student must attend a ten-day residency on the Antioch campus during which he or she completes coursework on the History of Publishing and Printing, Editing Books, Magazines, and Ezines, Book Design, Use of Publishing Software, Fund Raising, Development, and Financial Models for Presses and Magazines, Establishing a new Press, Magazine, or Arts Organization, Marketing, A to Z, and a Career Planning Session.
Stage II and IV: Off-Campus Projects Periods (5 months): During the five-month Project Periods, Certificate students perform off-campus activities that will help him or her develop and ultimately complete a meaningful internship project in publishing—including site analysis, a project proposal, and, where relevant, a business plan.
Stage III: Second On-Campus Residency (4 days): At the second four-day residency, students focus on a significant group publishing project. The purpose of this activity is to give the student practical experience in using the collaborative model intrinsic to publishing at all levels. For example, a group might devise a marketing plan for a book or a development strategy for a book or literary magazine. Presentations are given on the last day of the residency.
Students will also meet with a mentor who will help them analyze and approve a site for internship or a significant entrepreneurial independent publishing project.
Stage V: Third On-Campus Residency: (3 days) The Certificate Program concludes with a final three-day residency on the Antioch campus, including an oral presentation, and a final Career Planning Session with our mentors.
