There are three things that really stand out
to me about my Antioch experience so far. The core philosophy of social
justice at Antioch that guides the program, the focus on learning to
design and implement effective lessons that are student centered, and
the fact that there are no grades. At most schools, the focus is on
grades first and understanding second. Antioch is the opposite, and
that has allowed me to really concentrate and listen in class. I have
found that I can get involved in the discussions and achieve better
understanding of the material. |

I’ve
always wanted to be a teacher but started a family instead. The desire
to teach stayed with me and when the youngest of my four children was
in high school I decided to quit working and attend college full time,
a California Teaching Credential was my goal.

When I first discovered Antioch, I was extremely excited to find an
entire university that shares my vision of education and the world. As
we began the credential program, we were told that this year would
transform us, and I was more that skeptical of this prediction. But now
as I am concluding the third of 4 quarters, I find myself emerging not
entirely transformed, but refined and defined, confident and prepared.

Antioch practices what it preaches -
progressive, student centered learning in a caring and supportive
community. This program has exceeded all of my expectations and I am
truly grateful for the amazing, passionate and experienced professors

The teacher education program at Antioch
University addresses my needs as a teacher of whole children. The
experienced, creative professors share specific strategies and challenge us to think outside our comfort zones. The program
addresses issues of social justice from all aspects: position (student,
teacher, parent, and administrator), race, class, gender… it helps us
decipher were we stand, who we are, and most important, what we want to
do about it. It’s been a great experience to be part of a group of
people who want to change the world and aren’t afraid to let other
people know it. |
