Concentrations

Students studying creative writing focus not only on the writer's craft but also on the ethical import of language and story and on the socio-political context within which work is produced. The concentration encourages students to experiment with multi-generic modes and to consider alternate narrative strategies.

The Liberal Studies concentration offers the broadest education across all domains of knowledge with in-depth study in specific areas of interest. Liberal studies courses assist students in becoming independent life-long learners with an ability to think critically and creatively about the social issues that influence their lives and their world.

The Psychology concentration provides a comprehensive foundation in psychological theory and practice while also highlighting the social, political, and economic contexts that shape the psyche and its suffering.

In Urban Community and Environment (UCE) concentration, students study the urban setting from an interdisciplinary perspective that emphasizes the dynamic interplay between the arts, histories, systems, environment, and peoples of the city. The UCE concentration takes as its lens the unique dynamics of Los Angeles in order to understand a broad range of urban communities, past and present, from a global perspective. Through systematic engagement with community organizations doing work in urban arts and services, students develop theoretical and practical tools for contributing to the growth and improvement of urban culture, equity, and livelihood.

The Business and Social Entrepreneurship concentration offers a social engaged approach to the study of business. By highlighting the individuals and organizations that foster entrepreneurial change in the social sector and the innovative business practices that effect positive social outcomes, students learn to develop the knowledge and skills to effect positive, lasting change within today's challenging business environment.

The Child Studies concentration prepares students for further education and careers in education, psychology, human services, and child advocacy with an emphasis on the social conditions that shape children's lives. The concentration offers an in-depth study of the relations between community, social agencies, families, and schools in the developing self of the child.

Starting July 1, 2009, the B.A. in Liberal Studies Program is offering a new minor area of concentration in Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender (LGBT)/Queer Studies.

This new minor combines a range of exciting interdisciplinary courses and independent studies with opportunities for internships at pioneering community-based organizations such as the LA Gay and Lesbian Center and Bienestar , where students may earn credit and gain professional experience by interning in service to the queer community.

The new LGBT/Queer studies curriculum includes the following courses, with additional ones under development:

Queer History of Los Angeles
LGBT Identity Issues
Queer Cinema
LGBT Counseling: Postmodern Skills and Collaboration
Queer Literature
Gay and Lesbian History in Documentary Film
Queer Theory
