"The Bridge Program wouldn't be the same without BA student interns. Bridge interns mentor, teach, and guide Bridge students, working one-on-one with students who are shy or struggling and ultimately, helping us form a learning community with a large group of students. I think it's safe to say that Bridge interns have been instrumental in making the Bridge Program a success -- and that Bridge interns often leave the program as confident teachers themselves."
"I wanted you to know this student is amazing. He continues to volunteer when he has the time. Thank you for referring such a considerate and professional individual to us."

"I'd have to say that our internee is certainly a gifted person who was dedicated to both our organization and her school. One of the great things about having her in the office was that she would regularly tell us things that she had learned in Antioch University classes, and the information would help us research our magazine and website. Her education definitely helped her bring a little something extra to the table."
"I'd been thinking of a career change prior to coming to Antioch University. I had an idea of the type of organization I wanted to be a part of but kept putting off taking on a career change, because I thought it may negatively effect my educational goals. However, Antioch University's emphasis on social justice, responsibility and action inspired me to seek out internships that would allow me to utilize what I was learning in my classes. Instead of the wrong time for a career change, I thought it might be the perfect time.
After finding an organization that spoke to my values and what I was learning, I began to speak with Antioch University's Internship Coordinator who provided me with the specific guidelines of the program. Although our communication was by email, it was in no way limited, I received all of the information I needed. In the process of setting up the internship a full-time position opened within the organization I was looking into. Although I had no experience in the field, from previous conversations with the Director of the organization, she believed I was a good candidate. I was invited to apply and I got the position! The knowledge and support I received from Antioch University gave me the courage to challenge my own complacency and look where it got me."

“I had a great time, all the people were really cool. I had a choice of ongoing projects that I could help with and always looked forward to going. We went to libraries that I had not been to in the past and learned how to do research using microfilm: a process I had completely forgotten about since junior high. Since then I have actually used that method of research a number of times for other projects I am researching. I have no idea what I am doing from here but my internship made a difference because I am not from here and this gave me an opportunity to hear more about local LA history. It fed my desire to know more about what it means to live in an urban environment. I am done here at Antioch University Los Angeles and I wish that I had done more internships while I was a student”

"The Advocate was a great place to internship. It is a place where you don’t just make coffee, a place that you start writing as soon as you get there. I spent some potion of two days a week there looking on the web for any queer related news and then rewriting the articles and putting it on the Advocate website. They also allowed me to interview the first lesbian couple to get married at Disney Land and write an original piece for their website. It was very satisfying to see my name at the head of the piece. Before this internship I didn’t have any experience in journalism and I learned much more about writing specifically for a magazine. I would recommend anyone interested in journalism to intern at a magazine or newspaper and the Advocate was a good choice because it is so small and personal. The Advocate is also the kind of place that the more you put into it the more you get out of it. They invited me to stay another term and besides looking good on a resume the longer I stay the more I get to write and the more contacts I get to build. Internships are a great opportunity for students to relate their classroom experience with what is happening in the world.

"Writing has always been a struggle for me, so I surprised myself when I volunteered to T.A. for the Andrea Richard's Research Design class. After enjoying T.A-ing for her in statistics, I decided to take any other opportunity to do it again, even if it was for a course on writing about research. I am glad that I made that choice, and had a really positive experience. My main fear was that there would be very little I could help the students with. I was sure that they wouldn't need my help and that if they did, I wouldn't be able to give them what they needed. This turned out to be far from the truth. I met with students regularly whom I was able to help organize and provide guidance to on writing research reports and analyzing statistical results. The whole experience was extremely valuable and has help me gain some confidence in my own writing".

"My experience as a teaching intern in the Bridge Program was one of the most challenging and rewarding of my life, one I will carry with me into my future as a writer, a teacher and a human being".

"This quarter of Bridge served in providing valuable insights into my view of pedagogical practices…I was very impressed by the student’s willingness to engage and take control of their education"

I believe in changing the system and empowering individuals but I have had trouble finding my own place in that. Bridge is changing that for me. I am beginning to see that sometimes it’s just a matter of being there, being available for someone to bounce ideas off of or listen too. It is taking care of the logistical side of things so that class runs smoothly. It is learning about education and finally believing it.

I have never been one to volunteer. Not in the sense that I didn’t think volunteering was a good thing, but in the sense that if I decided to volunteer I wouldn’t make that big of an impact...Not only did I learn that my time makes a big impact on others, but it also makes a big impact on me.

“I must say we have had a very good experience with the Antioch interns, they have all come with a very enthusiastic outlook and wide open to learn and give selflessly of them selves. We applaud your students at least the ones we have encountered. All have been very hard working and ready to be a sponge. We feel not only have they had the opportunity to learn a lot about the non profit sector through us but they have given an incredible amount of valuable time and energy to our organization.”
