Antioch University’s Master of Fine Arts program was founded in 1997 as the nation’s first low-residency creative writing program on the West Coast. At two 10-day residencies each year, students gather at the site of the world’s only M.F.A. program specifically devoted to literature and the pursuit of social justice. Rather than focusing exclusively on the completion of a single book-length Final Manuscript, the M.F.A. Program educates students in the various roles of the Writer in Society, how to make a difference on the page and in the diverse communities where writers work and live.
A Low-Residency Format
Students visit campus for an intensive ten day residency, followed by a five month online project period, during which they write under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
A Social Justice Perspective
In keeping with AULA's progressive, socially-conscious values, MFA students learn the various roles of the writer in society, discovering how to make a difference on the page, and in the diverse communities where they work and live.
Innovative Offerings
In additional to traditional writing courses, AULA's MFA program includes thought-provoking offerings such as Field Study, the Translation Seminar and Conference, studies in writing for young people and the Post-MFA Certificate in the Teaching of Creative Writing.
An Award-Winning Faculty
Every MFA faculty mentor is an actively publishing writer who is also an exceptional teacher. Our mentors care as deeply about their students as they do about their own writing. Distinguished guest writers have included Dorothy Allison, Steve Almond, and Sandra Tsing Loh.
