Three Questions
with the President

President Neal King

Talking about....

Antioch College

Q: What is the current situation with Antioch College in Ohio?

NK: At the February board meeting, the Board of Trustees reconfirmed the June 2007 decision for the temporary suspension of operations at Antioch College campus in Ohio effective June 30, 2008.

Q: What about AULA? Is Antioch University Los Angeles closing too?

NK: No. It is only the residential campus in Ohio that is temporarily suspending operations. The Los Angeles campus is on solid financial footing and continues normal operations.

AULA continues to grow and thrive. We are excited about the start of our Spring quarter and look forward to our 36th annual Commencement exercises in June.

Q: So, what is going to happen to Antioch College?

NK: At this time it is unknown. The Board of Trustees is in continuing discussions with the Antioch College Continuation Corporation (ACCC) for the future revival of the College. Everyone at Antioch is committed to the future revitalization of the College.

Spring Alumni Event

On Saturday, February 23rd AULA alumni and their families joined current faculty and staff for Antioch's 2008 Spring Alumni Event. Over 250 alumni of all generations had a chance to reminisce with old friends, catch up with faculty and staff and bond with other Antioch alums over deserts and coffee. The event was held high above the city at the Regency Club in Westwood, where despite threats of rain, the skies cleared long enough to allow guests to enjoy the amazing view of the surrounding area.

For many, it was their first opportunity to meet AULA's new President, Dr. Neal King, who was inaugurated in October 2007. Antioch University Chancellor Dr. Toni Murdock and several members of the Antioch University Board of Trustees (including Board chair Art Zucker) were also all in attendance.

president"It was a thrill for me to get a chance to mingle with so many of our alumni over the course of the afternoon" added Dr. King. "It is always heartening to hear graduate after graduate from our 35 year history attested to the multiple ways in which AULA has impacted their lives."

Beloved staff member Sharon (Bland) Nightingale was honored for her incredible 33 years of distinguished service to Antioch, with three generations of her family in attendance. Dr. Al Erdynast helped lead the celebration by offering a heartfelt - and at time teasing - tribute to Ms. Nightengale. He also gifted her with a plaque of appreciation from the entire AULA community, which she has since displayed on the bookcase within her office on campus.

sharonAs the jazz band played their last song and the event began to wind down, it was apparent that the afternoon was a grand success.

"It was great to meet so many of our alumni face to face. And we've gotten a lot of positive feedback from the alumni regarding the time and venue" said Chris Wolfe, Manager of Donor Relations. "Who knows - maybe the spring alumni event at the Regency Club could become a new AULA tradition!

sm dutch angle crowdPlans for the next Alumni event, slated to be held in Fall 2008, are already underway. Information will be sent out to all Alumni well in advance of the event and the entire AULA community hopes that even more alumni will plan on joining in on the fun.

Antioch University Los Angeles
Goes Green(er)

trees smallerAULA has a renewed our commitment to urban sustainability. We are working diligently to improve our green practices both on our campus
and in our individual daily
lives.
On campus we have recently launched several initiatives to help support a
more sustainable community such as:
  • Reusable (washable) dishware and flatware
  • Recycled content paper products, including 100% recycled stock notepads
  • Recycle containers throughout campus for all plastic, glass and paper products
  • Printing on post-consumer recycled papers with soy-based inks
  • Energy efficient lighting wherever possible
We recently hosted the Antioch University Board of Trustees on our campus for their Spring board meeting. We decided to offset their entire visit by making the week's activities carbon neutral. A task force has been put into place to address issues of campus sustainability and to help engage the larger community in social action around green issues.

Additionally, President King has signed the American College and University President Climate Commitment, which commits our campus to the work of integrating sustainable practice into both our curriculum and our operations.
