Library Policies for Collection Development

Collection Development

The AULA library collects materials in support of the university's curricular and research needs as well as the university's commitment to supporting social justice and activism. Primary emphasis is on acquiring current materials that reflect varied perspectives, including those marginalized within mainstream culture, with a special emphasis on increasing access to online scholarly resources.

Weeding

Materials which do not support the AULA library collection's stated purposes and objectives may be removed in order to maintain a current, active, and useful collection that makes efficient use of limited space. Whenever possible and necessary, faculty will be invited to participate in the weeding process.

The following criteria will be employed when de-selecting library materials:

  1. Physical condition
  2. Duplication (multiple copies)
  3. Curricular value (applying only to AULA's current and anticipated curricula)
  4. Publication date (out of date materials)
  5. Superseded editions
  6. Obsolete materials
  7. Overall research value to faculty and students
  8. Availability of materials in available electronic resources

Donations

The AULA library welcomes donations that support the curricular and research needs of its students and faculty. The AULA library collection has been built, in large part, by the generosity of faculty, alumni, students, and community member donors.

Donations are accepted with the understanding that they become the property of the AULA library upon receipt. Donors may request documentation of their donations for tax purposes. However, per IRS regulations, AULA is not permitted to provide appraisals of donated materials.

Due to space constraints, it is necessary for the AULA library to be selective in deciding what may be added to the library collection. Retention of donated materials is at the discretion of the library director. Donated items not retained by the library may be offered for sale, donated to another library, state facility, or charitable organization, or discarded.
