Currently it is not realistic to anticipate immediate success in opening a full-time, private practice in locations where many therapists already practice. That said, there is more work now than ever before if you wish to practice in under served area and/or with diverse populations. Furthermore, many people believe that the future of the profession is in the hands of master’s degree holders as MA level professional are less costly to employ than those who hold PhDs or MDs.
Today, the need for mental health professional is growing at a more rapid rate than the number of mental health professionals available. Opportunities are expanding for work with many special populations, including children in foster care, older adults, adolescents, and members of the LGBT community and with such family-related issues as adoption, divorce and blended families.
