Horace Mann Final HandoutAnne Ursu, author of The Real Boy, will be presented with the Horace Mann Upstanders Book Award at the 7th Annual Children’s Literature Conference.

Paul Fleischman will be awarded the Lifetime Upstander Award
Linda Christensen and Rethinking Schools will be awarded the Community Upstander Achievement Award.

Three books have been cited as Honor Books:
Seeing Red, written by Kathryn Erskine and published by Scholastic Press
Remember Dippy, written by Shirley Reva Vernick and published by Cinco Puntos Press
Otis and the Puppy, written by Loren Long and published by Philomel Books.

Established in 2008, the Horace Mann Upstanders Book Award honors books in which the main character recognizes injustice and acts in a way to right the wrong. This award honors new children’s literature that best exemplifies the ideals of social action and in turn encourages young readers to become agents of change themselves.

2nd Annual Day of Service @ Los Angeles Regional Food Bank

AULADayOfServiceFlyer_060814-page-001We are supporting the Food Bank’s mission to mobilize resources to fight hunger in our community. 1 in 6 people in L.A. County experiences hunger. More than 1,000,000 people, including 400,000 children, are served through Food Bank programs annually.

We will assemble food packages for over 22,000 low income seniors, women with infants, and children in Los Angeles County. The food packages consist of food items like canned fruit, canned vegetables, rice, cereal and other non-perishable food items.

All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes

Minimum age requirement to volunteer is 14 (sorry, no exceptions)

Parking available on-site
Modest continental breakfast provided
