Graduates Describe Experience at AULA as Transformational

To view the power of a transformative education, you need only to look at Antioch University Los Angeles’ 2011 commencement speeches.  On June 26, 2011, more than 200 graduates were challenged to make a difference in their chosen professions and in their communities. In a statement from the Antioch University Board of Governors and Chancellor Dr. Toni Murdock, the graduates were urged to become advocates for the greater good and positively impact the lives of others.

The student speakers were engaging and spoke on topics that resonated with the graduates. They described what brought them to AULA, their experience and their transformation.

M.F.A. in Creative Writing speaker Philip Barragan learned that the only limitations we have are what we put on ourselves. He spoke of pushing through comfort zones.

M.A. In Psychology speaker Morgan Fitz Gibbon broke into tears as she recounted losing everything and then finding everything she needed at AULA. She describes AULA as a special blend of individuality, creativity and community.

M.A. in Organizational Management speaker Mindy Danna said she was looking for transformation not just education and she found that at AULA. She is dedicated to making an essential contribution to this world.

Education Department speaker Eldon Kline said it was an extraordinary journey. He wants to contribute to the social justice issues in our schools and be a force for change.

B.A. in Liberal Studies speaker Nina Frick stated that she is a fundamentally changed person. She added that knowledge should not be set aside for the privileged few.

Bridge Program Completer Andrea Leahy spoke from the heart about wanting to be a role model to her daughter. The Bridge program was a turning point in her life.

This day marked both an ending and a beginning for the graduates. Now comes the enormous responsibility to promote, participate and lead the efforts to bring about social change and make an essential contribution to the world.
