Antioch University Los Angeles Appoints Dr. Tex Boggs President

Dr. Boggs Brings Impressive Background and Passion for Education to Presidency

Culver City – July 6, 2011-- Dr. Tex Boggs was recently appointed President of Antioch University Los Angeles by the Antioch University Board of Governors. He is a seasoned academic leader with a passion for education and a deep respect for the education process and community engagement. He has a sustained commitment to a transparent administration maintaining personal contact with students, faculty and staff. Together, Dr. Boggs and AULA are building on their rich histories to foster creativity, leadership and social change.

“The AULA Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve Dr. Boggs’ appointment as President,” says Board Chair Dianna Wong, Principal with Dianna Wong Architecture and Interior Design. “Dr. Boggs has an extensive background with a wide breadth of experience. We are all excited to work with him an administrator and leader.”

Dr. Boggs has served AULA as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs since July of 2009.  Bringing his exceptional strengths to that position, he shepherded an accreditation reaffirmation process for AULA, he worked alongside administration and faculty members to develop and launch the Master of Arts in Urban Sustainability program, and encouraged and supported the reinstatement of in-depth five year program reviews that include both self-studies and external team visits.  

“The remarkable students, faculty and staff at AULA have reinforced my belief in the value of community and experiential learning,” says Dr. Boggs. “I am honored and excited to serve AULA as its President.”

Prior to accepting his appointment at AULA, Dr. Boggs was President of Western Wyoming Community College, a position he held from 1988 until 2008.  During his tenure as president of WWCC, Dr. Boggs was appointed Chairman of a Governor's Blue Ribbon Commission on Community Colleges, appointed a Commissioner for the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, and twice elected to serve as a Senator in the Wyoming State Legislature. While a state senator, he sponsored several successful education related bills including one that funded the National Guard Youth Challenge Program, which provides troubled youth with a second chance to earn their high school degree.

Before his move to Wyoming, Dr. Boggs served as Dean at the University of Kentucky from 1983 to 1988 and held numerous positions at Kentucky State University including those of faculty member, director of Social Science research, Dean of the Evening School and Community College, and Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs.

His commitment to education began early in his career when Dr. Boggs served as a Peace Corp volunteer in Thailand.  As a volunteer, he taught English at the National College for Physical Education and was an assistant coach of the Thai national track and field team.  Following his Peace Corps experience, he served for five years as an Economic Development Officer for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).  

Dr. Boggs has served as a consultant to the University of Missouri in their Vietnamese Refugee Resettlement Project; to the USAID through the Center for Research on Economic Development of the University of Michigan as a consultant for education reform in the Cameroons and as a consultant assigned to the drought stricken areas of southern Ethiopia; to the Tuskegee Institute CRS as a consultant to the Community Development Program; and, to Syracuse University Project Advance as a consultant to the Duel Credit program and Teaching Assistant Development project.

A graduate of Ferrum Junior College and Davis and Elkins College, Dr. Boggs received both his masters and doctoral degrees from Cornell University. Dr. Boggs and his wife, Lien have three adult children and one grandchild.
