Emotion Pictures: Recent Work by Don Bachardy extended and a new show by Felice Picano to open
CULVER CITY, CA – November 8, 2007 – Antioch University Los Angeles today announced two campus art exhibits to remain on display through the month of November.
Emotion Pictures: Recent Work by Don Bachardy has been extended through November 26, 2007. This provocative new exhibit by famed portrait artist Don Bachardy opened in October as part of AULA’s Presidential Inauguration celebration. Set to close on November 1st, the artist has agreed to extend the exhibit, which is open to the public.
Bachardy’s bold and striking portraits are always completed in a single, personal sitting as opposed to from photographs or other still images. With over forty pieces, the exhibit features Bachardy’s most recent work which was mostly completed within the last year. Notable pieces include two paintings of Dr. Terry Roberts, Antioch University Los Angeles faculty member and one of the Little Rock Nine – which recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the historic integration of Central High School in 1957.
Also set to open is the new exhibit by acclaimed artist and author Felice Picano, entitled Early Gay Presses: 1977-1997. The exciting and comprehensive exhibit features artwork such as covers, interior layouts, posters and advertising from the first generation of “out” gay books published beginning in the late 70’s and spanning over two decades. Also included in the exhibit are entire presses laid out and complete.
Sponsored in part by AULA’s LGBT specialization in Clinical Psychology program as well as the MFA in Creative Writing program, a special opening reception will be held at 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 14th with the artist giving a brief public lecture and reading from his new work Art and Sex in Greenwich Village.
“We are thrilled to showcase Felice Picano’s work” says LGBT Specialization Director, Douglas Sadownick, Ph.D.. “Felice is a founder of SeaHorse Press, one of the founders of Gay Presses of New York, and an infamous member of the Violet Quill group. He literally established modern gay writing as we know if it today.”
Picano, an award-winning author of over 17 books, is thought by many to be best known for The Lure, set post-Stonewall. His revolutionary work heralded the LGBT movement with a bold call to action that allowed the LGBT community to believe that their sexualities and psychologies were worthy of the greatest artistic representation. He is also known for co-writing The Joy of Gay Sex with Charles Silverstein (updated in 2003) and for his heralded Like People in History, as well as science fiction works such as Dryland’s End.
Both exhibits located on the Antioch University Los Angeles campus and are free and open to the public.
Antioch University Los Angeles is located at 400 Corporate Pointe in Culver City. Emotion Pictures; Recent Work by Don Bachardy is located on the second floor and the Felice Picano exhibit, Early Gay Presses: 1977-1997 is located on the first floor. General parking is available in the structure adjacent to the University for a small fee, or street parking is available.
