Public Lecture and Q&A with Filmmaker Charley Lang to follow screening
CULVER CITY, CA – February 4, 2008 – Antioch University Los Angeles, in association with the LGBT Specialization, is pleased to announce the free film screening of the 2003 documentary Gay Cops: Pride Behind the Badge on Tuesday, February 19th at 5pm.. The screening will be followed by a short lecture and Q&A by professor and award-winning filmmaker Charley Lang.
This deeply moving and often funny documentary chronicles the lives, the loves, the challenges and the triumphs of lesbian and gay law enforcement officers from around the United States. Shot the week of 9/11 against an unexpectedly world-changing event (and currently used as a training tool in police academies nation-wide) GAY COPS challenges homophobic stereotypes about masculinity, gayness and heroism through personal stories of bravery and commitment, and ultimately, profound moral courage.
The filmmaker, Charley Lang, MFT, is a professor of psychology at Pacific Oaks College, Phillips Graduate Institute and Antioch University Los Angeles. A psychotherapist in private practice in Larchmont Village, he is also Director of the Postmodern Therapy Training Program at the California Family Counseling Center. In addition to “Gay Cops: Pride Behind the Badge”, Mr. Lang has produced and directed the award-winning documentary films "Live To Tell: The First Gay & Lesbian Prom in America" and "Battle For the Tiara".
“I admire Charley as an artist and a filmmaker and the fact that he brings his ability to synthesize art and science to his work as a visionary teacher/activist/leader” stated Douglas Sadownick, Ph.D., Director of the LGBT Specialization at Antioch University Los Angeles. "We are thrilled to have Charley Lang as a part of the LGBT program here at Antioch University Los Angeles”
Antioch’s new Master’s level specialization in LGBT studies, the first such graduate program in the nation focusing specifically on LGBT counseling theory and practice, commenced in the Fall of 2006 and has already received strong reviews for its innovative curriculum. The overall goal of the specialization is to strengthen the competency, clinical skills, and sensitivity of students to issues of LGBT-pride, diversity, dignity, self-respect, self-esteem, and cultural awareness. An information session for the LGBT specialization will immediately follow the screening and lecture as is also open to the public.
“Charley has done much to make the LGBT specialization a vibrant reality, by developing ideas for its inception and by being an amazing and affirmative teacher” added Dr. Sadownick. “He is also a member of our Founder's Group, which meets regularly to go over how to teach the cutting edge field of LGBT Affirmative Psychotherapy.”
The screening and lecture begin at 5pm on Tuesday, February 19th and are free and open to the public.
Antioch University Los Angeles is located at 400 Corporate Pointe in Culver City. General parking is available in the structure adjacent to the University for a small fee, or street parking is available.
