Preliminary Level I Education Specialist Credential |
|

|
California has a two-tiered credential structure which leads to a Preliminary Level I Education Specialist Credential. This is the first document issued after an individual has met basic credential requirements. The Level II is the clear credential which is issued once all credential requirements have been completed. The Education Specialist Instruction Credential authorizes the holder to teach in the area of specialization listed on the credential in the following settings: Special day classes; special schools; home/hospital settings; correctional facilities; nonpublic schools and agencies and Resource rooms.
Antioch University Los Angeles currently offers the Mild/moderate Education Specialist Credential K-12 Level I (in addition to our Multiple Subject credential) and is currently preparing to offer the Level II.
- Candidates begin in July and can complete the program the following June.
- Candidates engage in novice teaching in two assignments; one in a Mild/moderate environment and one in a regular education classroom (this may extend the year of preparation into the summer)
- The program is a four quarter full time program and classes meet two nights a week from 4 pm to 9:45 pm.
- Candidates are full-time novice teachers during the third and fourth quarters (accommodations can be made for individuals who are in a teaching assistant position). Antioch is currently applying for Intern program approval.
- Candidates are supervised in the field by an appropriately credentialed professional who visits at least six times per quarter.
- Individuals who already have attained a multiple subject credential can enter the program in January, complete the specialist course work and field work and will earn the Specialist credential.
- Candidates proceed in a cohort model and classes are small and personal.
- Antioch’s unique pedagogy assesses students individually, giving credit/no-credit rather than grades and reflective assessments eliminate the need for tests.
- With a deep commitment to social justice, we place the needs of all students at the core of our work. All candidates are familiar with a diverse set of skills and strategies to provide a safe inclusive classroom for all with particular emphasis on the needs of second language learners.
- Admission to the program is holistic and based on a demonstrated commitment to helping all students succeed.
