Bridge Students Visit the Getty

Last Sunday, Bridge students gathered at the Getty Center. As the morning rain lifted, Bridge’s art history instructor, Sharon Kagan, along with Getty’s own resident expert led us through the wonder of hand-painted illuminated manuscripts, the beauty of the architectural photographs of Frederick H. Evans, and the de-familiarization of urban landscape through the contemporary photographs of Catherine Opie, Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao, and Soo Kim. We explored the Getty’s permanent collection. We strolled through the garden, and we saw the formidable sculptures of Leonardo da Vinci (one of which is pictured above). After the adventure, one student remarked that seeing the work in person entirely changed her perspective on art and its place in our culture.
